Scotland to Newcastle Ferry

The Northumbrian king invited Irish monks to settle on Holy Island in AD 635. Some time in the 670s a monk named Cuthbert joined the monastery and became Lindisfarne’s greatest monk-bishop. He was the most important saint in northern England in the Middle Ages (statue in left photo). This monastery was also where the famous Lindisfarne Gospels, early medieval stone art, were created in the early 8th century.
